Where the building work should stop, and usually doesn't
Almost every extension leaves a mess outside it: spoil, a trampled lawn, a step down to nothing and a drain in the wrong place. Handing that over to a landscaper six months later means paying twice for access and living with a building site in the meantime.
Ian Richardson's project included "sliding doors and external landscaping" in the same package, for exactly this reason. And Janet Lewis's review mentions the detail we're most fond of: "They even made a set of steps so our dog could access the garden."
Levels resolved with the threshold
A level threshold at the doors dictates the patio falls, the drainage channel and where the steps land. We set those out with the building work, which is the only time it's easy.
Drainage that's designed
New paving changes where water goes. Channel drains, soakaways and falls are part of the design, not a response to the first heavy October.
Finished ground, not builders' ground
Paving laid, steps built, beds formed, turf down, fencing made good. You should be able to walk out of the new doors the week we leave.
